GEMS: Girls: Engineering, Mathematics & Science

 

March 24, 2018 - South Dakota State University

This one-day workshop provides an opportunity for eighth-grade girls to explore interests in engineering, science, and technology. Scheduled every spring, the workshop lets students interact with professional women from industry, as well as with professors and students from SDSU. The goals of this workshop include introducing eighth-grade girls to engineering, math, and science; increasing student and parent knowledge in these areas; providing an environment that facilitates learning and excitement; and inspiring eighth-grade girls to continue to pursue the courses of study introduced during the workshop..

Metallurgy Engineering: Materials, Metallurgy & Forensics

July 10-14, 2017 - South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

If you already know what a metallurgical engineer does and what doing a "forensic investigation" entails, then you know how cool this camp will be! In case you do not know about this field of engineering, here are just some of the things you will do at this camp: Learn about nanomaterials, composites, polymers, metals, and the making of a Samurai Sword, get hands-on with heat treating, blacksmithing, welding, and casting, Do materials testing (i.e., impact and tensile strength testing) and materials characterization using an optical and scanning electron microscope, and Practice forensic engineering by investigating how materials fail.

Mechanical Engineering: 3D and Beyond

Explore the expanding and ever-changing world of mechanical engineering in this hands-on career camp! Students will spend the week with the School of Mines Mechanical Engineering Department getting hands-on experience with 3D printing and Additive Manufacturing (AM). Students will design parts, from concept to prototype using Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and produce functional assemblies that address an engineering grand challenge.

Explore the fascinating world of Chemical and Biological Engineering in this hands-on career camp! You'll get in touch with your inner mad scientist, and learn what it is like to be a chemical, biochemical or biological engineer! Spend the week doing hands-on experiments in labs and elsewhere. Make friends with other people interested in this essential area of science and engineering while you learn about things like: chemical process design, converting biomass into products, such as biofuels or biopolymers, processing of microelectronic devices, creating and purifying biopharmaceuticals, developing high-tech nano-materials and nano-energetics, generating alternative energy by novel catalysts, and designing food processes for consumption . . . think: CHOCOLATE!
